eBooks @ PLU: Citing eBooks

A guide to the PLU Library's eBook collection, including how to access, troubleshooting, and checkout options.

Citing E-books

Many citation styles have specific rules for citing e-books. Here are the most common ones. For those not listed here, consult our citing sources guide or ask your librarian.

Chicago

If it's downloaded, such as a Kindle, EBL, or EBSCO e-book, indicate the format at the end of your citation:

MacCormick, John. Nine Algorithms That Changed the Future. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2011. PDF e-book.

If you read the same book online without downloading it, format your citation like so:

MacCormick, John. Nine Algorithms That Changed the Future. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2011, http://plu.eblib.com.ezproxy.plu.edu/patron/FullRecord.aspx?p=781782

E-books do not always have stable page numbers. Citing the chapter, section heading, or other location information is preferred. Remember that the object is to make your reference findable to readers.

APA

If it's downloaded, such as a Kindle, EBL, or EBSCO e-book, indicate where you downloaded it from at the end of your citation:

MacCormick, J. (2011). Nine Algorithms That Changed the Future [EBL version]. Retrieved from plu.eblib.com.

If you read the same book online without downloading it, format your citation like so:

MacCormick, J. (2011). Nine Algorithms That Changed the Future. Retrieved from http://plu.eblib.com.ezproxy.plu.edu/patron/FullRecord.aspx?p=781782.

For more details, consult the Purdue OWL (linked below) or the APA style manual.

MLA

If you downloaded the book, MLA format considers the downloaded format an edition, which you include like so:

MacCormick, John. Nine Algorithms That Changed the Future. EBL edition, Princeton University Press, 2011.

If you read the book online without downloading it, cite it like this:

MacCormick, John. Nine Algorithms That Changed the Future. Princeton University Press, 2011. eBook Collection (EBL), http://plu.eblib.com.ezproxy.plu.edu/patron/FullRecord.aspx?p=781782.

For more details, consult the Purdue OWL (linked below) or the MLA style manual.
